Temple Beth El (TBE) in Portland, ME is seeking a skilled, committed and creative individual with a passion for serving a mission-driven organization to fill the critical role of Interim Executive Director (Interim ED). ABOUT THE POSITION AND ORGANIZATION We are excited to identify an experienced and collaborative interim operational leader who can serve a multi-constituency congregation; organize, inspire, support and motivate staff; foster a culture of respect and inclusivity; and continue the tradition of outstanding professionalism necessary for success in this role. In this exciting position the Interim ED will manage an already dynamic organization while playing a pivotal role in facilitating its transition to a new permanent Executive Director. This individual will also assist the Board in further evolving sound organizational strategy, operating and financial principles. Founded in 1947, TBE is the largest Conservative Jewish congregation in Maine with a membership of over 300 families and an annual budget of $1M. TBE encompasses the synagogue, a religious school (Kadima Beth El), a community cemetery, and relationships with various partners and building tenants including the Levey Day School and the Orthodox congregation Shaarey Tphiloh. The synagogue owns a 21,000 square foot building built in 1948 and is staffed by 7 FTEs that include a Rabbi, Member Engagement Director, Communications Manager, Education Director, and part-time educators, administrative associates, custodial staff, plus an outsourced bookkeeping service that organizes day-to-day financial operations and reporting. CANDIDATE PROFILE AND QUALIFICATIONS The right Interim Executive Director candidate will demonstrate experience in managing change, staff, operations, internal and external relationships, and finances for a membership organization while serving in a temporary and transitional role. This individual can present from any cultural background and will either possess - or be able to rapidly attain - a sufficient working understanding of contemporary synagogue life to be effective in the role. The Interim Executive Director will have the temperament and good judgment required to manage staff and operations during a time of change and to interface across diverse generations, perspectives, and traditions - demonstrating a genuine interest/passion for TBE’s mission and community. Successful candidates will preferably be Master’s degree prepared with a management degree or related certificate but will be seriously considered if equivalent skills and experience can be demonstrated. Ideally the individual will have a minimum of 5 years of relevant administrative leadership experience some of which has been in an interim role. They will have the quantitative and analytical skills to support sound decision making as well as strong technology skills, social media savvy, and the ability to communicate clearly in writing and in person. COMPENSATION This is a contracted position with an anticipated monthly compensation range of $ 7,000 - $ 11,000 depending on qualifications and contracted hours. WORK LOCATION This position will initially require substantial on-site presence at the synagogue in Portland, ME in order to establish relationships and gain a thorough understanding of the organization and role. Over time, options for partial remote work are anticipated to develop.
