Oral Historian - Johns Hopkins University - USA - work from home job Company: Johns Hopkins University Job description: The Berman Institute is undertaking an oral history project to interview members of the founding generation of American bioethics. The resulting collection, titled Moral Histories, will serve as a unique and accessible resource for understanding the creation and formation of the field. The Berman Institute of Bioethics is seeking an Oral Historian to join the staff for of the Institute's Dracopoulos-Bloomberg iDeas Lab for one year to lead the next phase of the Moral Histories project. It will become part of a group of projects designed to inform and engage the multiple publics interested in bioethics, including scholars, policy makers, health care professionals, researchers, students, and of course the public at large. This role will directly report to the Director of the iDeas Lab. The Oral Historian will conduct all oral history interviews, from start to completion---including but not limited to archival research, interviewing, editing, following up with interviewees, and preparing final interview materials for deposit in the University Archives. The Oral Historian will be responsible for the scheduling management of all oral history interviews. They will also work with the iDeas Lab to make creative outputs. The iDeas Lab is a newly created creative group within the Berman Institute with the goal of enhancing the Berman's Institute's work, reach, and impact with the latest digital media, multimedia, and design for the dissemination of bioethics research and analysis. Applicants must have outstanding organizational skills, be able to manage complex projects with diverse stakeholders, be able to work independently as well as communicate and collaborate effectively in a team environment. Specific Duties & Responsibilities • Oversee Phase two of the Moral Histories project. • Carry out interviews (approximately 20 a year) from start to completion---including but not limited to archival research, scheduling, interviewing, editing, following up with interviewees, and preparing final interview materials for deposit in the University Archives. • Set standards and ensure quality control throughout the oral history program, for example, documenting best practices, reviewing completed interviews, and advising on resolution of sensitive issues as they arise. • Identify oral history opportunities of potential interest to outside funding sources and prepare proposals for oral history program support. • Work with providers from within and outside the University to evaluate current technology appropriate for capturing oral histories. • Communicate regularly with key stakeholders on project activities and deadlines. • Assist with formal and informal grant reporting by coordinating, drafting, and facilitating the review of reports. • Participate in conference calls with grantees, team members, and partners. • Attend all regular team meetings and provide updates on projects as requested. • Maintain all project-related files in a database and assure files are organized and current. • Develop and share quarterly reports of project statuses to leadership. • Manage Freelancers. • Collaborate on creative outputs from the oral histories. Minimum Qualifications • Bachelor's Degree. • Four years of related experience including graduate study in history, specialization in oral history or public history, primary and secondary research and writing experience or closely related field. Preferred Qualifications • Master's Degree preferred with a specialization or interest in oral history or public history (e.g., history, journalism, communication, anthropology, sociology, public policy, library sciences). • Professional background in communication, journalism, media, history, or library science, with at least three years of demonstrated interviewing experience (including carrying out research and editing transcripts) for collecting oral histories and creating archival collections of oral histories. • Experience with the History of science or medicine; experience with medical ethics/bioethics. • Experience interviewing people with an academic background.
